DescriptionThe 2016 Fall Convocation took place on Thursday, September 1, 2016 in the Decker Theatre, Daniel Z. Gibson Center for the Arts. Honored guests included Brian Scott who was the recipient of the 2016 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching and alumni honorees Brenna Nan Schneider ’06 and Jessica Emanuel Spotswood ’02. Brian L. Scott has held a joint appointment in the Department of Economics and the Department of Environmental Science and Studies since his arrival in Chestertown in 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics and business management with an emphasis on finance from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska; a postgraduate certificate in International Marketing and International Trade from the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland; and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy of Economics from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He is currently the Adrian Reed Associate Professor of Environmental Science and Studies. Scott teaches introductory and advanced courses in microeconomics and environmental and natural resource economics. Brenna Nan Schneider ’06, an international studies major and winner of the George Washington Medal, is the founder and CEO of 99 Degrees Custom, a sports apparel manufacturer for brands including New Balance and Under Armour. Her company is committed to creating employment in struggling post-industrial cities like Lawrence, Massachusetts, where 99Degrees Custom is located. She successfully raised $400k to support her business model and was awarded a MassChallenge Diamond Prize and the top prize at the EforAll Accelerator. Jessica Emanuel Spotswood ’02, an English/drama/music major at Washington College, is the author of the YA trilogy The Cahill Witch Chronicles published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers. Born Wicked was published in 2012, Star Cursed followed in June 2013, and Sisters’ Fate was released in August 2014. Her newest book, Wild Swans, was released this summer, and she recently edited A Tyranny of Petticoats: 15 Stories of Belles, Bank Robbers & Other Badass Girls, a collection of historical short stories focusing on girls at various eras in American history.
